Vice President Accounting & Finance

Location: Falcon Heights, MN

Blaze is seeking an experienced Vice President Accounting & Finance. This position is responsible for overseeing the accurate and timely preparation and presentation of financial management reports including internal and external financial statements, audits and budgets. The VP/Accounting and Finance will also summarize and forecast credit union business activity, develop and maintain branch and product profitability analysis.

Role and Responsibilities

Oversee the activities of the accounting department and finance department to ensure the accurate and timely preparation and dissemination of financial management reports including internal and external financial statements, audits and budgets.

  1. Review financial statements for accuracy prior to finalization and submission to senior management and the Board of Directors as well as third party business partners.
  2. Monitor components of net interest margin; prepare liquidity, dashboard, peer comparison and concentration matrix reports for ALCO.
  3. Supervise the annual budgeting exercise and oversee the production of forecast information needed for growth and planning decisions and monitor actual performance variances.
  4. Manage month end and year end closing process.
  5. Establish and maintain systems and controls which verify the integrity of all systems, processes and data to enhance the credit unions value.
  6. Coordinate financial and regulatory reporting changes attributed to business combinations/mergers on an as needed basis. Also provide resource support attributed to system conversions.
  7. Assist with Blazes’ existing ALLL committee and associated environmental factor calculation.
  8. Coordinate strategic plan materials involving financial related information.
  9. Active participant on the Credit Union’s Project Prioritization Committee.
  10. Supervise the AVP of Accounting and the Director of Finance

Summarize and forecast credit union business activity and financial position in areas of income, expenses and earnings based on past, present and expected operations

  1. Utilize Asset Liability Management (ALM) modeling to project growth and pricing scenarios.
  2. Implement branch accounting, member and product profitability analysis and prepare and analyze quarterly and annual reports on financial performance
  3. Provide supervision and development of the financial analyst position.
  4. Provide supplemental reporting for various business units (i.e. Retirement Investment Services, etc.).

Provide leadership, training and development of assigned staff to retain a motivated, service oriented, and professional work force for the credit union.

  1. Establish and communicate job responsibilities and performance expectations to assure mutual understanding of desired results through formal and informal channels.
  2. Assess associate performance; provide positive and constructive feedback on an ongoing basis to reinforce desired results.
  3. Identify training and/or development opportunities to assist associates in achieving enhanced job performance and/or career objectives.
  4. Coordinate the accounting and finance activities of the credit union with other departments.
  5. Act as an example to staff by upholding Blazes values, mission, and goals.

Monitor trends and changes in compliance laws, rules and regulations in participation with Blazes internal Risk Management Committee to ensure Blaze remains compliant in the areas of responsibility.

  1. Analyze and coordinate written response to prior exams and collaborate with other departments and associates to ensure closure of audit findings
  2. Manage policies and procedures within areas of responsibility.
  3. Monitor internal controls established within accounting & operations departments

Must comply with applicable laws and regulations, including but not limited to, the Bank Secrecy Act, the Patriot Act, and the Office of Foreign Assets Control. Must be in full compliance with applicable FASB, OTS and SEC pronouncements and regulations, and FDICIA.

Perform other duties as assigned to support effective branch operation.

Experience/Education/Certifications/Licenses

Eight to ten years similar or related experience; Experience within the financial services industry; Advanced knowledge with accounting software required; Experience with ALM modeling software strongly preferred; Equivalent to college degree (BS or BA in a relevant field); CPA preferred; will sponsor accreditation if selected and don't have CPA.

Demonstrated Knowledge

Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. Knowledge of financial statement preparation and review to measure growth and income against company history and peer groups. Knowledge of interest rate risk and asset liability management. Proven managerial abilities. Strong analytical skills. Exposure to the area of risk management. Experience within the financial services industry. Ability to develop professional relationships and to build cooperative teams with coworkers to lead staff toward the completion of department objectives and goals. Skill in finance related calculations to incorporate into spreadsheet procedures. Knowledge of Blaze products, services, policies, and procedures. Ability to problem solve, make sound decisions, and exercise good judgment. Ability to organize multiple tasks and to maintain a courteous demeanor in a busy, high stress work environment. Ability to adapt and implement changing technology so the Credit Union can benefit from faster, better ways of completing tasks. Ability to communicate and understand Credit Union procedures to instruct others. Ability to employ advanced interpersonal techniques (advising, confronting, resolving conflicts).

Ability to sit an stand; answer calls; operate computer; interact with internal staff and public on the phone; travel to designated offices; lift up to 20 lbs
